Peacock Class

Peacocks

Our Year 5 and 6 children are taught in our Peacock Class by Miss Rawson and Miss R.

Topics and learning

Our Whole School Topic for Summer is ‘Precious Planet Earth’. Click here to view our topic map for Summer 1.

In Spring, our topic is ‘Step Back in Time’. We will be looking at British monarchs from Henry VII through to Queen Victoria before focusing on what life was like for children during Victorian times. We will then move on to looking at the changes in crime and punishment.

Click here for the Year 5 topic map and here for the Year 6 topic map.

In the Autumn term, our topic is ‘The Shang Dynasty’. Click here to see our topic map.

Keep an eye out for our updates and photos on tapestry to see what we are learning about.

Our class events

Peacock Class Music POP Task – April 2022

In music this half term, Peacock Class have been exploring ‘advanced rhythms’. We began by learning about the Kodaly method. We then built on this by exploring different clapping rhythms before trying these as a canon. We also incorporated singing alongside body percussion as a canon. Finally, as their POP task, children worked in pairs/small groups to compose, notate, edit, practise and perform their own rhythms using some of the techniques we have explored.

Area and Perimeter with Starbursts! – 2nd March 2022

To practise finding the area and perimeter of compound shapes, year 6 worked with a partner using starbursts to create their shapes. They used different colours to show how the shape can be partitioned. They then drew and labelled their shapes using cm2 paper and found the area and perimeter.

‘Step Back in Time’ Art Work – January 2022

Peacock Class created their own portraits inspired by Victorian silhouette portraiture. Can you work out who is who?

Geography POP task – January 2022

Before beginning our geography work this term, we completed a ‘kahoot’ quiz to assess prior knowledge of continents and oceans. We then recapped the continents and oceans along with some of their features before completing a short paired activity labelling and illustrating blank maps. Finally, we completed the ‘kahoot’ quiz again achieving much higher scores!

Street Lane Bake Off! – December 2021

Peacock Class made gingerbread men for the Christmas Market as well as baking and decorating their own chocolate yule logs for our ‘Street Lane Bake Off’.  It was so hard for our “guest judges” to choose the finalists and an eventual winner as they all looked and tasted delicious!

Christmas Performance – 7th December

Peacocks were fantastic in their Christmas performance.

Wellbeing Workshop – 26th November

Peacock class enjoyed their well-being workshop on Friday where they were taught  a variety of calming techniques, about the role of a well-being champion and the importance of looking after their mental health.

Odd Socks for Anti-Bullying Week – 15th November 2021

On Monday 15th November, we wore our odd socks to support National Anti-Bullying Week. KS2 also took part in a live lesson from the BBC to celebrate this year’s theme ‘One Kind Word’.

Remembrance – 11th November 2021

Year 5 and 6 looked at the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae. In art, we then practised sketching poppies to create watercolour backgrounds for the poem.

Live Science Lesson – November 2021

Peacocks really enjoyed our live science lesson. We found out lots of new  and interesting facts about the lifecycle of coral.

Fire Safety – November 2021

In preparation for Bonfire Night, we had a visit from some local firefighters. As you can see, we had a lot of  fun hearing about their roles and responsibilities, as well as trying on their helmets!

Autumn Topic – The Shang Dynasty/The Firework Maker’s Daughter

Year 5 and 6 have been reading ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ by Philip Pullman. As well as using this for our VIPERS work and whole class reading, we have used it as inspiration for some of our writing. Peacock class recently wrote setting descriptions and character descriptions based on the book which are currently on display in our classroom. We also created ink paintings inspired by Chinese artwork and then had a go at writing our names in Mandarin.

JuniorSTEM Lego Robotics Workshop – July 2021

Key Stage 2 had a brilliant day using a mix of computing, DT and STEM skills to build and program two lego models.

Lea Green at Halloween – October 2020

We had a fantastic day building fires and dens in the morning and then racing buggies and completing obstacle courses in the afternoon!
